My heart melts when I hear the song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers.
It's such a goofy sounding song to me, but as soon as I hear the intro I start feeling warm fuzzies. Sometimes I hear the intros to other songs that sound kind of like "I'm Gonna Be" but aren't, and I still get the warm feelings inside. It's always been my dream, since the first time I heard it, to have a man sing it to me.
It's pure romance:
When I wake up yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door
When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you
When I come home yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door
When I'm lonely yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man whose lonely without you
When I'm dreaming yes I know I'm gonna dream
Dream about the time when I'm with you.
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door
He wants to walk 1000 miles, even though he knows he will probably die because of it, just so he can say he was the one to walk 1000 miles to be with me?! What a crazy romantic fool. Just the kind of man I like.
I'm fairly certain that Rodgers does not know this song. But I bought it from iTunes. And soon, I will beg him to learn it and sing it to me. He comes back to Texas in 11 days, by the way. :D
Steven Curtis Chapman covers this song on his All About Love album. I'm sure it's not the same as the original but I thought it was very romantic too. And funny... I like the part where he knows he's gonna pass his whole paycheck on to her when he gets it.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how it would sound without a Scottish accent... That would be interesting.
ReplyDeleteI also think it's romantic to write things in the sand on the beach, even though the waves are going to wash it away, which does not demonstrate love lasting. I don't know why I like writing things in sand. If I was a psychologist I would want to analyze that.
